Placing context on winning, losing, and the outcome of conference

Every student attending conference should have a goal for his or her performance. Attaining that goal is the definition of success in an MAL conference. Having the single goal of winning an award is a dangerous idea because awards are not always given to the best student in the room. At the end of conference, prior to returning home if at all possible (the trip back is often the perfect time for this), every team should debrief as a group and discuss what went right and what went wrong. Having a tradition for debriefing is a nice way to build team spirit, tell stories about conference, and provide valuable feedback on performance.

Feedback should be tailored to each student and be based on your understanding of what the student’s goal was for that particular conference. Students who win awards as part of their goal should be congratulated, but do not allow the award to substitute for positive feedback or necessary negative feedback. The award, while nice, should be irrelevant to your assessment of their performance.

Lastly, it is important to note that placing context on the outcome of conference is necessary at your institution as well as among your students. Every post-conference cleanup should include an email or letter to all relevant offices at your institution to inform them of your team’s performance. The letter is pretty simple if your team won multiple awards and a little more strategic if your team did not. Remember that the participation of your institution brought something of value to the conference and that therefore the conference brought something of value to the institution. Explaining to chairs, deans, and others what value was brought to conference, and what value was brought back to campus, helps administrators understand what their investment in your program bought. Sharing those details in a carefully designed letter will bring all sorts of benefits over time.
